The CrossFit Fernie Story
We were introduced to CrossFit when Jeromy was a firefighter. His crew trained to prepare for anything that was thrown at them in the line of duty.
He realized how effective the program was and that many people could benefit from this style of training whether you were a first responder or not.
CrossFit Fernie began in 2012. We started training in our garage with friends but word quickly spread, our membership grew and we are now surrounded by our amazing members in our third location. Our coaching team also grew to include a diverse group of people who are always learning and striving to be the best educated, motivated and passionate team around.
CrossFit Fernie is Fitness, Strength, Conditioning and most importantly, community! (add a dose of serious fun in there too!) Take it from some of our members:
“Finest group of coaches and community you will ever meet. Very well run and welcoming.”
“Crossfit Fernie is a top notch affiliate and an awesome place to get your fit on. They’re fully stocked with all the Crossfit equipment needed to tackle any wod, and their coaches are friendly and very knowledgeable. I personally love my time there and recommend CFF to anyone!”

Coaching brings me so much happiness to help people reach all their fitness goals and motivate them to work hard at them. I’m so proud when they attempt movements they never expected to try. I’m inspired and motivated by the people around me and it pushes me to work harder.
Something you don’t know about me? I was a BCRPA certified fitness instructor for 10 years teaching aerobics/step and interval classes at the local gym. Yes, I was born here too:) AND I ride a Harley

I love Crossfit because it rewards hard work and discipline. I love the competitive aspect of it and how it makes people feel powerful to do things in and out of the gym they maybe would try otherwise.
For me Crossfit helped me become empowered. It taught me that I was capable of more than I ever thought I could be, and I built friendships in the gym that have helped me through some really tough personal challenges.
I became a coach because I realized that I enjoy sharing in peoples successes and I feel like I have the ability to help people get better. I enjoy watching people move and finding ways to help them improve as athletes. The look on someones face when they achieve something they’ve been working towards is pretty amazing.
I feel like everybody knows everything about me… I like to sing loudly to music when I drive and probably 80% of my brain is song lyrics. I was a farm kid growing up. Had my own cow named Pumpkin and a pony names Toots.

I love CrossFit for how it has changed my idea of fitness, my self confidence/body image and made me actually love the gym! I never thought that would happen. Coaching has enabled me to help others to come to those same conclusions as well. I love seeing someone’s eyes light up when they accomplish something they never thought was possible. I resonate with those same feelings from when I started CrossFit. One of my favourite parts about coaching is high fives at the end of class… and the occasional belly bump.
Something you might not know about me is even tho I absolutely LOVE to lift weights… I’m kind of an old lady too. I like knitting, crocheting and going to bed early. (But maybe that’s cause I coach @ 6am some days. Hope to see you guys around the gym soon! 🙂

I love coaching at Crossfit Fernie. When I walk in the doors before everyone gets there I feel the “pre energy,” like that pre-workout mix about to kick in, I know the work out will be rock and roll. I enjoy watching people walk in just after work at 4:45 or 6 on a Thursday, and they are looking for some motivation and guidance to help them with their goals. Whether those goals are simply to just get to the gym and see a smiling face or to entice them to push one more strict and perfect rep; being a coach, I get to help people work hard, with tenacity and direction. At times the workouts can get aggressive; however, with control and guidance, they become awesomely aggressive.
I really love being a part of something that makes people awesome at the things they want to do. Fernie is a place of “epic-ness;” however, to participate in that “epic-ness,” a level of fitness is a central component to that. Whether it be skiing, biking, hunting, sledding etc., the level of fitness required to play in these mountains and valleys is substantial. Being a part of the community, where the energy of those people resides, makes me enjoy coaching and being a part of something that is working to help people find their “epic-ness.”
Some things different about me…
I took an Endurance Physiology course while in England…While I was playing rugby, 1st division for the city of Chichester… no big deal ☺
I have watched all 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls. I have thrown grenades and shot machine guns all the while taping Dawson’s Creek and reading The Note Book. I like to box and cuddle my kids. My goals in fitness are to appear as a holy physical god to my children…until they turn 6, then they will figure out I am just a goof ball that wants to throw down 360’s and jump my bike. I want to be able to keep up to my oldest on the hill, I want to throw down sweet ballet moves for my two youngest and still have the energy and strength to move any piece of furniture for my wife.
At the end of the day, I love being a member and coach with Crossfit Fernie. The people, the community, and the fitness makes me happy. This health center, gym, box, holy hall of fitness allows me to reach my goals with a community of people that makes me want to be there.

I coach because I have always loved being active and it is awesome to help other people set and reach their goals. I got into coaching CrossFit Kids because I love working with kids…I am a teacher! I believe that CrossFit kids promotes a healthy life style and helps build confidence. The best part about CrossFit kids is we get to teach our kids how to get active, healthy and build their confidence by having a lot of FUN! I wish CrossFit Kids had been an option for me when I was a kid!
Something you may not know about me is that in high school I hung out in our weight room everyday at lunch time but was always too intimidated to try to lift weights.

Something you probably don’t know about me……I was the best 8 and under shooter at a black powder shoot in Manitoba in 1983. It was the first and only shooting contest I have ever entered . I went out on top. It is my favourite award.

I love Crossfit because it is literally constantly varied. Not only is it a great method of exercise it is so much more. It makes you stronger mentally and physically. It provides training for you to be better at the activities you love and just to be better at being you.
It has helped me make fitness and health a huge priority in my life. Sickness, disease, injuries can all be, to some extent, preventable. Making CrossFit a part of my life, I feel has equipped me to be a healthier, happier version of myself hopefully for a long, long time. I really believe that I will be able to ski, travel, have fun and live longer all because I made CrossFit a part of my life.
I see coaching as an opportunity to share this awesome lifestyle with others as well as challenging myself to learn more and be better. In a town where everyone is an amazing athlete, I know what it’s like to be your average joe. I am not the fastest, strongest, fittest, or have a 6 pack but I am better at so many things because of CrossFit. It truly is for everyone. I wish people would get over the preconceived notion you need to be fit to start CrossFit, just do it and fitness along with so many other benefits will follow.
I am a sports nerd with an obsession for taking trips, although this is nothing anyone wouldn’t know….
I worked for the Canadian National Ski Team for over 7 years but I never ski raced growing up, in fact I really didn’t start skiing until my 20’s and I am a way better skier now since moving to Fernie and joining CrossFit Fernie.

I love crossfit because it provides such a wide variety of challenges!! More than I’ll be able to perfect in a lifetime. If you manage to get bored with CrossFit you’re doing it wrong. The amazing community is another huge part of my addiction to CrossFit- I found my people!!
Crossfit has helped me redefine my physical limits over and over! My kids are growing up seeing their mom and dad living active, healthy lives and taking part in the CrossFit Kids programs as well. And most importantly it allows me to spend more time with my wife doing what we enjoy.
Coaching CrossFit was a natural progression for me. I’ve been involved in fitness in one way or another my whole life and I love to help people break down self imposed limitations and reach their goals! It’s also another exciting step in my personal fitness journey.
Most people don’t know that I grew up in logging camps and small towns in the Queen Charlotte Islands on the west coast of BC. l can still vividly remember seeing my first escalator, such a hillbilly!! Also if you try to put my head under water you’re in for the fight of your life!!
Healthy Steps Nutrition – CFF Nutrition & Wellness Coach
Like many teenage girls, I struggled with body image all throughout high school. My lack of self-confidence carried through in most things I did. I hated participating in gym class, worried my peers were judging the amount of jiggle in my gym shorts, and extra curricular sports were a definite no. I wanted to lose weight, but I had no idea how to get there. Cutting calories (drastically) seemed like the only answer.
I started with cutting breakfast. Unable to make it to lunch without any calories, I would stop by the vending machine to purchase a package of Gobstoppers. I would eat a small handful and save the rest to get me through the week. When lunchtime rolled around, I would have an apple. I would try my best to skip dinner, telling my mom I would eat dinner on my break at work.
I finally started to lose weight, and lots of it. I felt confident enough to get a gym pass and started going in the early morning, clocking as many minutes on the treadmill as possible.
Eventually, my body started to give up. I started to lose hair quickly, and one morning I couldn’t even get out of bed. My energy stores were depleted. Seeing the drastic change, my mom threatened to send me to the doctor if I didn’t stop the unhealthy habits I had developed. So, I went back to eating; poutine from the school cafeteria, pasta for dinner, toast and cheese whiz at breakfast. The pounds piled back on, and then some.
This pattern continued through until my early twenties. If there was a fad diet, you bet I tried it. My weight would yo-yo back and forth, I had several sizes of jeans in my closet to accommodate my ever-changing waistline, and my self worth was found in a number on a scale.
After the birth of my first child I separated from my then spouse, and really wanted to do something for ‘me’. I had a cousin who just finished a bikini competition, and I was motivated by her results. I hired a coach, who was chosen based on her proximity to where I lived. Unfortunately, this coach was more driven to sell me weight-loss shakes than giving me a real nutrition plan. I ended up doing a lot of research and designed my own nutrition program. Risky, but I had great success. I placed third in the Bikini category. There are no short-cuts, I spent 16 weeks of packing around Tupperware loaded with chicken and veggies.
People around me saw my results and wanted me to give them meal plans to gain defined abs as well. These people were coming to me hoping to find a ‘secret’ and I believe they were truly disappointed when they realized how strict one has to eat to maintain a 12% body fat. Say goodbye to dinner with your friends and hello to tilapia and green beans.
I believe there are many people out there living the same struggle I was. Fighting the constant battle of wanting to feel confident in their appearance but trying to find a short-cut to get there. I want to be able to help people realize that eating healthy is a life-long commitment, you should do as little as possible to lose weight, and if the changes you make don’t feel sustainable, they won’t work.
I want to be able to support people in their journey to healthy eating habits, and show them with a little persistence and education, their goals are within reach. Say good-bye to cabbage soup diets and hello to sustainable, healthy nutrition!
